I found the problem with timemachine backups and Leopard was the user FOnts folder in ~/Livrary/Fonts.

Exckuding this folder made TimeMachine work OK.

I found this out by looking in the console log (All Messages)and there, eventually, found a message

16/05/09 10:30:41 AM /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[2111] Indexing a file failed. Returned -1120 for: /Users/bj/Library/Fonts/Abadi MT Condensed Light, /Volumes/TLSBackup/Backups.backupdb/BobJPro/2009-05-15-223223.inProgress/E2EA3962-731E-4718-847F-D9714DE908BA/BobJPro/Users/bj/Library/Fonts/Abadi MT Condensed Light

Using the filter to focus on backupd was VERY helpful.

I installed latest Leopard updates and it seems that now Time Machine is ignoring StartInterval Integer settings. I had it set to 86400 seconds for daily backups. It now started to make standard hourly backups. Anyone experiencing this?

Well I'm very pleased to have read this article, and I'm also very pleased to see such a well-written article too!

I am a loving user of Time Machine as well but I find that the hour period that it takes as read should be user-customizable. So I'm chuffed to find your fix for editing that .plist file!

Cheers!

Hi Chris,

I just stumbled on your article via macosxhints.com. FYI: when using ls, an @ after permissions does not indicate that the file is a symlink but that it has <a href="http://arstechnica.com/reviews/os/macosx-10-4.ars/7" rel="nofollow">extended attributes</a>. You may view them with "xattr -l filename". Maybe this helps you on tracking your problems.

Bye, Philipp.

at the small graphics firm i used to do IT at, i made everyone switch from entourage to mail/ical because of that stupid database. all the backups (using chronosync back then) went from 1hr+ to just a few minutes.

The size of your destination drive could be an issue in the future as your data set grows. A good solution for this is a Drobo. It's an external USB drive (effectively) that allows you to start with a number of disk drives that makes sense for how much stuff you have today, and really makes it easy to add storage as you are running out of space.

Check it out here:
www.drobo.com

You can check out the MacWorld review at:
http://www.macworld.com/2007/08/reviews/drobo/index.php

Hope this helps folks who aren't sure how much storage they are going to have in the long run, and how best to back it up.

While I did not completely read the article, I'm also impressed (and sold with) the idea of Time Machine. Actually I'll probably read the rest of this later when I have time.

Now that it's being impersonated on other platforms (Linux, Windows) perhaps a GUI will soon follow on those as well fairly soon here...
